Issue 40

“Art Deco Lung” is, in effect, a history of America from the late nineteenth century to the latter half of the twentieth as told from the point of view of artist Maxfied Parrish, famous in the early twentieth for his dreamy, luminous paintings. It takes into account the personal history of Parrish, from his confinement at a tuberculosis sanatorium in his early years to his old age in the early 1960s, as recorded in his (largely fictional) secret notebooks. However, the history of science, politics and art recounted are historical facts.
